W. E. Sykes was formed in 1927 by a group of engineers and first established in a small works in Staines, Middlesex. As a result of the large demand for gear cutting machines and tools for military equipment that came with the Second World War, Sykes developed a considerable export trade as well as an increasing home market. By 1951, a large expansion was required. The original small premises became the Sykes Machine Tool Co, a leading importer of tools and equipment from Europe and the USA. The export trade of the main company was facilitated by the formation of subsidiaries in Canada and Australia and by the appointment of numerous established firms as agents.
Sykes went from strength to strength, and is still a household name in the gear manufacturing industry. However, no new Sykes machines have been released for over 25 years.
Now, Sykes returns to the world stage with state-of-the-art CNC technology. W. E. Sykes GB Ltd have successfully rebuilt a Sykes H160 gear hobber from scratch, and retrofitted it with a brand new Siemens 802 DSL CNC control (full details click here).
